Vegetables
Now is the perfect time to plant the vegetable garden. It should be warm enough for crops like tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers, but be wary of cooler nights. Plant more of your earlier crops like lettuce, carrots, peas and beans at the beginning of the month. Staggering regular plantings every few weeks will ensure a fresh crop throughout summer.
Flowers
Spring brings an array of annuals to choose from; Petunia, Begonia, Alyssum and many more are suitable for garden beds, pots and hanging baskets. Perennial plants such as delphinium and daisies are perfect for some colour. Marigolds are a great companion plant for the veggie garden as the deter insects.
Fruit Trees
Pheromone traps should be put out to help control codling moth. If present spray with Yates Maverick or Neem oil to kill and caterpillars. It is important to spray for these before they enter pip fruit like apples and pears.
Shrubs
Pruning shrubs like camellias and rhododendrons after they have finished flowering will help encourage branching out with new growth, follow with a feed with an acid fertilizer like (insert product). Hedges will benefit from a light prune to the new growth and a top dressing of Tui Chicken and Sheep Pallets.
